About the Recovery 5 Ton
The 5 tonne is the middle of our three recovery trucks and the one that covers most of what falls outside a car. Light commercials, 4x4s, minibuses, small plant and machinery on skids: loads that are too heavy or too long for the 3 tonne truck but nowhere near needing the heaviest vehicle. It steps up in three ways. The bed is 6.5 metres rather than 5.5, which matters more often than people expect: length disqualifies a truck as readily as weight, and a long wheelbase van will overhang a 5.5 metre deck. The winch goes to 10 tonnes from 6, giving considerably more margin when a casualty has to be dragged rather than driven on. And the carrying capacity is 5 tonnes on a 10 tonne gross vehicle. The bed is a tilt and slide, so a vehicle that will not roll, steer or brake can still be recovered. It is winched on rather than driven on. As with any recovery job the useful information is the same: what it is, roughly what it weighs, whether the wheels turn, and where exactly it is sitting.

What the site needs
A safe, legal stopping position with several metres of clear space behind for the bed to tilt and slide down. Firm ground for the winch to pull against and for the truck to stand on while loaded. On a highway, consider the recovery position and any lane closure before the truck is dispatched.
Common questions about the Recovery 5 Ton
When is the 5 tonne the right choice over the 3 tonne?+
When the casualty is heavier than 3 tonnes, or longer than 5.5 metres, and the length catches people out more often than the weight. A long wheelbase van can be well within 3 tonnes and still overhang the smaller bed. The 5 tonne also carries a 10 tonne winch against 6, which helps on a difficult drag.
Can it recover a small excavator or similar plant?+
If it is within 5 tonnes and fits a 6.5 metre bed, yes. Tracked plant needs care getting onto a tilt bed and the tracks must be secured properly for transport. Tell us the make and model, or send a photograph, and we will confirm before dispatch.
What is the winch actually for?+
Pulling a casualty that cannot be driven, whether that is up onto the bed or out of the position it is stuck in. Ten tonnes of winch on a truck that carries five is not a mismatch. Dragging a dead-weight vehicle, especially uphill or out of soft ground, takes several times the force that its weight alone suggests.
How is this different from the 10 tonne truck?+
Carrying capacity, mostly. The 5 and 10 tonne trucks share the same 6.5 metre bed and the same 10 tonne winch. What differs is what the vehicle is rated to carry, 5 tonnes against 10, and the gross weight, 10 tonnes against 20. If the casualty is under 5 tonnes, this is the smaller and more manoeuvrable of the two.
