About the Crane 70 Ton
The 70 tonne is usually hired for reach, not for weight. It sits between the 50 and the 100 in our fleet, and the reason to step up to it is rarely that a load is heavier. It is that the load has to go further out, or higher, than the 50 can manage while still carrying it. Boom is 50 m against the 50 tonne's 42 m, and hook height 56 m against 48 m. Those eight metres change what is possible on a constrained site: they let the crane stand further back from the building, which is frequently the real problem rather than the lift itself. Counterweight is 18 tonnes and the outriggers span 8.0 m fully extended. As with every mobile crane the rating is quoted at minimum radius, and what governs the job is the load chart at your radius and height rather than the number on the side of the machine. The extra counterweight is what lets a 70 hold more at distance than a 50, and it is also why the ground matters more: 18 tonnes of ballast plus the machine plus the load, all concentrated onto four outrigger pads. Establish bearing capacity and size the mats before setting up.
What it is good for
- Lifts where the crane has to stand well back from the load, over a boundary, a building or an excavation
- Steel and precast at heights the 50 ton cannot comfortably reach
- Setting rooftop plant on taller buildings
- Industrial installation work at radius: vessels, ducting, ventilation units
- Jobs where the 50 ton is on the chart but with no margin
What it is not for
- Confined standing. 8.0 m of outrigger span plus tail swing is a substantial footprint
- Short, light lifts close in. The 50 ton, or a lorry loader, will be cheaper and faster to set up
- Any lift over ground whose bearing capacity has not been established
What the site needs
Level, compacted standing for the full 8.0 m outrigger span, with clearance behind for tail swing. Ground bearing confirmed and mats sized for 18 tonnes of counterweight plus machine and load through four pads. Access wide enough for the crane, and overhead clearance checked across the whole working radius.
Common questions about the Crane 70 Ton
Why would I take the 70 rather than the 50?+
Distance, in most cases. The 70 has 50 m of boom against 42 m and 18 tonnes of counterweight against 12, so it holds more at radius. If your problem is that the crane cannot get close to the load, whether that is a boundary wall, an excavation or a building in the way, that is what the 70 solves. If the crane can stand right beside the lift, the 50 is usually enough.
Will it reach over a building?+
That depends on the building's height and how far back the crane has to stand, which together give the radius. 56 m of hook height is a lot, but the capacity available at that height and at your radius is what settles it. Give us the building height, the standing position and the load weight and we will check it.
What arrives on site?+
The crane, and the counterweight separately. Eighteen tonnes of ballast does not travel on the carrier, so allow for trailers as well as the crane itself, and for rigging time at the start of the hire and de-rigging at the end. Access has to suit the trailers too, not only the machine.
What stops a lift on the day?+
Wind is the usual one. Every load has a wind speed above which it cannot be flown safely, and a large surface area, such as cladding, panels or empty vessels, brings that limit well below what feels windy at ground level. An unconfirmed load weight, poor visibility between operator and banksman, and anyone inside the exclusion zone will also stop it.
