About the Forklift 3 Ton
The 3 ton is the smallest forklift we hire and the one that fits where the others will not. Its turning radius is 2.3 metres, roughly a metre tighter than the 8 ton, and that single figure decides most jobs: it is the difference between working an existing warehouse aisle and having to restack the racking to get a truck down it. It is also the only machine in the range offered with an LPG engine as well as diesel. That matters if any of the work is indoors. Diesel exhaust in an enclosed warehouse is a ventilation problem and often simply not permitted; LPG is the usual answer where a building has to stay occupied while the work happens. Three tonnes is the rating at a standard load centre, with the weight sitting close to the carriage. Push the load further forward, with a long crate, a bundle of pipe or anything on an oversized pallet, and the truck lifts less than its badge says, because the load is acting on a longer lever. The 1.2 m forks suit a standard pallet; anything deeper than that needs checking before it is booked. Lift height is 4.5 metres, which reaches most second-tier racking but not a high-bay warehouse.
What it is good for
- Loading and unloading delivery vehicles in a yard or loading bay
- Moving palletised stock inside a warehouse, where the aisle is too tight for a larger truck
- Indoor work in an occupied building, using the LPG engine option
- Light site duties: blocks, bagged material, small plant on pallets
- Second-tier racking work up to about 4.5 metres
What it is not for
- Anything approaching three tonnes on long forks or an oversized pallet, because the load centre derates it quickly
- High-bay racking. 4.5 m of lift is roughly two pallet tiers, not four
- Rough or unmade ground. This is a hard-standing machine, not a rough-terrain one
What the site needs
Firm, level hard standing: a warehouse floor, concrete apron or well-compacted yard. Aisle width has to suit a 2.3 m turning radius plus the length of the load on the forks. Overhead clearance for the mast at full lift, and for the mast retracted when passing through a doorway or roller shutter, which is the measurement people forget.
Common questions about the Forklift 3 Ton
Can this forklift be used indoors?+
With the LPG engine, generally yes. That is what the option is for. A diesel engine running inside an enclosed building is a ventilation problem and many sites will not allow it at all. Tell us when you enquire whether the work is indoors, outdoors, or both, because it decides which engine goes out.
How wide does the aisle need to be?+
Work from the 2.3 m turning radius, then add the load. A truck needs room to swing its tail as well as its forks, and a long load on the forks increases the space required to turn into a rack. If you can measure your narrowest aisle and tell us the deepest load you are handling, we can say whether this truck fits before it turns up.
Does it really lift 3 tonnes?+
At the standard load centre, yes. Capacity is quoted with the weight sitting close to the carriage; move it further out and the safe figure drops, because the load acts on a longer lever. A dense 3 tonne pallet is a different proposition from a 3 tonne load that is two metres long. Give us the weight and the dimensions, not just the weight.
What is the highest it can reach?+
4.5 metres to the top of the forks. That covers most ground and second-tier racking. For a high-bay warehouse it will not reach, and the 5, 8 and 10 ton trucks only add half a metre to a metre and a half. Lift height is not where the bigger machines gain.
