About the Forklift 15 Ton
This is the largest forklift we hire and it is a specialist machine rather than a general one. Fifteen tonnes on forks covers loads that most yards see occasionally: a large machine being installed or removed, heavy steel fabrications, a loaded container that has to be repositioned. The constraint at this size is rarely the capacity. It is the footprint. A 4.5 m turning radius is twice the 3 ton's, and the machine is heavy before it picks anything up, so both the space and the ground have to be right. It is worth walking the full route with a tape before booking, because a 15 ton truck that cannot get round the corner into the bay is an expensive delivery. Forks are 2 metres, the longest in the range, which suits wide machine bases and long fabrications. Lift height is 6 metres, the same as the 10 ton. Capacity is what increases at this end of the range, not reach. And as with every forklift, the rating is quoted at a standard load centre and reduces as the load moves forward or the mast rises. On a load of this weight that reduction is substantial, so bring us the weight, the dimensions and the height, and we will check the chart before anything is committed.
What it is good for
- Single heavy lifts: machine installation and removal, large fabrications
- Repositioning loaded containers in an open yard within capacity
- Heavy steel and plate that is beyond the 10 ton
- Wide or long loads that need the full 2 m fork length to sit safely
- Jobs where a crane cannot get set up but the load still has to move at low level
What it is not for
- Anything but an open, firm, load-bearing yard. The 4.5 m turning radius and machine weight rule out most compounds
- Routine palletised handling. It is slower and far larger than the job needs, so take the 5 or 8 ton
- Lifting to height. Six metres is the same reach as the 10 ton; the extra is capacity, not lift
What the site needs
Open, firm, load-bearing ground along the whole route and at the working position, verified for a machine of this weight carrying near its rating. Clear width for a 4.5 m turning radius plus the load. Gate widths, corner radii and overhead clearance all checked in advance. At this size there is no improvising on site.
Common questions about the Forklift 15 Ton
Is the 15 ton just a bigger version of the 10 ton?+
In capacity and fork length, yes: fifteen tonnes against ten, and 2 m forks against 1.8 m. In lift height, no: both reach 6 metres. What really separates them is footprint. The turning radius goes from 3.8 m to 4.5 m, and the machine is significantly heavier empty, so the ground and the access have to be better.
What do you need from me to confirm it will work?+
Three things: the weight of the load, its dimensions, and the height it has to be placed at. Capacity is quoted at a standard load centre and falls as the load moves forward or rises, so on a load this heavy the difference between the badge figure and the chart figure is measured in tonnes. A photograph of the access route is worth sending too.
Would a crane be better for my lift?+
Often, yes, and we would rather say so than send the wrong machine. A forklift travels with the load at low level across firm ground. A crane lifts over an obstruction and places at height. If the item has to clear a wall, a building or a fence, it is a crane job. If it has to cross a hard yard, this is the cheaper and quicker option.
Can it be used on a construction site?+
Only on finished, load-bearing ground. This is an industrial truck on solid tyres and a hard chassis, not a rough-terrain machine. Fresh fill, sand and unmade ground will stop it, and its weight makes recovery difficult if it does get stuck. If the ground is not made up, tell us.
